Getting the Hang of It

I'm still getting the hang of this whole crafty blog posting thing.

I was super excited to show you my magnetic board I was decorating for a friend's bridal shower and tried to take pictures all along the way...and then...

I hadn't taken a picture of the final product.

The date of the shower changed.

I quickly wrapped the gift, and gave it away.

No final product picture...

But here is the process!

I took a square, wood framed, magnetic board from Roberts, and mod podged black and white paper strips to the front of it.

Then, I took sand paper and sanded down all of the edges, in kind of a haphazard way.  I made sure all the edges were smooth, but often took random chunks out of the paper.

Then I prepped the board for painting the wood that was showing.  I usually use some kind of painters tape/masking tape, to tape the edges of the metal part to protect it, but haven't been able to find mine since we moved...So I used Post-It notes.  And they were SO much easier!!!

None of that hassle of trying to get the tape to fit perfectly into the corner of the frame or having to stick it and restick it to get it right along the edge! The Post-Its were easy to apply and easy to get off.  And since I have a million of them from my teaching days, I think I'll stop trying to find my painters tape...

Next, I painted all the wood that was showing...and did a messy job of it on purpose.  I wanted it to overlap the paper, though not too much, and didn't want it to look too precise...

After the paint dried, I pulled the Post-Its off and glued a thick red satin ribbon vertically down the left side and a thick red satin ribbon and a thin black grosgrain ribbon horizontally across the bottom.  They looked great...you'll just have to imagine them...

I am working on some more shoes for the shop, as well as a tutorial for making your own pillow forms, so stay tuned!
