Adjustable Little Guy Tie

I have two little girls, so I make girl stuff a LOT.

But, my sister is having a BOY so I've been thinking boy lately as her baby shower approaches. (Look for evidence of the festivities next week!)

I decided her little man would need a tie.  A REALLY cute tie.

So, I made one...or two...

And I made a tutorial for YOU so your little guy can be stylin' too!

I started with an old striped shirt, because striped ties are my favorite.

I sketched a tie the size I wanted, extended it 1/4 inch for a seam on the bottom, gave it a couple of extra inches on the top, and tripled the width, then cut out the pieces! One piece of the tie and the lining for both the tie part and the knot, and an extra section of the bottom portion of the tie for the tip. (Not pictured: the rectangle of striped fabric, 12 inches by 1 3/4 inches for the neck loop)

Next, I sewed the right side of my striped material to the tip piece of lining and the wrong side of the striped material to the full lining piece.  Just sew the "V."

Clip the corner of the tip, flip inside out and iron flat.

Then, iron the edges of the tie in 3/8 inch.

Iron the edges of your tie to the middle so they overlap about 1/4 inch.  Make sure the two sides of your "V" at the tip are even.

It should look like this from the other side-

Now take your small rectangle and with both the outer fabric and lining, iron the edges in as seen below.  This is your knot piece.

Starting at the top of the tie, slide your knot piece down one and a half times.

Iron the knot pieces over the back of the tie, slanting them up a little to get the knot shape.

Sew the 12" x 1 3/4" strip into a tube and turn right side out.  Iron flat and sew ends shut.

Now that we're done with the ironing, pick up your needle and thread! Starting at the top of the tie, do a hidden stitch down the center to hold the two pieces together.

Now, wrap your knot back around your tie and hand stitch the two ends together. You can be as sloppy as you want because this piece won't show!

Lay your neck loop across the top of the knot.

Fold down the top of the tie.

Tuck the end under the knot piece and sew into place, near the bottom so you make sure you catch all the layers.

Add some snap fasteners (picture above) or velcro to keep it on your little man.  I added extra snaps so the neck was adjustable.

Enjoy your little guy tie!
