Now for the Tutorial -
You've already seen the skirt...
...but I thought I'd share with you JUST how EASY it is to make!
In fact, it is so easy that last summer, I made a BUNCH for Brooklyn to wear EVERYWHERE.
I'm excited to find the time to make a whole new batch for this summer!
Back to the instructions. Measure your little gal's waist. If you are making it for a gift or your little gal is asleep and you don't want to wake her up, just measure the waist of a onesie. Using that measurement, you will cut THREE strips of material.
STRIP ONE: Measurement X 1.5 + 1 inch. Cut this strip 3-5 inches wide - basically however long you'd like the top portion of your skirt + 1 inch for the elastic casing.
STRIP TWO: Strip One X 2. Cut this strip 5-7 inches wide - however long you'd like your bottom ruffle.
STRIP THREE: Strip One X 2 (Same length as Strip Two). Cut this strip 1.5 to 2 inches thinner than Strip Two.
From top to bottom - Strip One, Strip Three, Strip Two. Strips Two and Three are cut in half for me because I was working with a small piece of fabric.
Sew each of your strips into a loop. Hem Strips Two and Three. Baste Strips Two and Three together, with the RIGHT side of Strip Two facing the WRONG side of Strip Three. Gather them and sew them to the bottom of Strip One.
Zig-zag or serge the top of Strip One and fold over 1/4 inch more than the width of your elastic. Sew and insert elastic.
From the inside, your skirt should look like this -
Turn it right side out and top-stitch where all the strips meet, and you're done!
Go crazy with trying different patterns and fabrics and have your girl in ruffles all summer long! If you try this out, I'd love to see pictures of your finished products!
Ange,
ReplyDeleteI love these skirts! I can't wait for you to come back home!
