Men's Shirt to Girl's Dress

I'm pretty sure that just about every crafty blogger out there has a post like this...

I've been gleaning ideas of crafty blogs for a while now, but hadn't tried this one, though I'd saved several tutorials to reference when the time came.  Mr. Man finally ripped through this shirt's elbow one too many times to mend, so I grabbed it and decided to give the "shirt to dress" thing a try.

We started with this:

I know, I know, it's a horribly fuzzy picture, but it's not like you really care what the original shirt looked like anyway...

I followed Dana's tutorial on her site, MADE, for turning a shirt into a dress.  I kind of did a twist of several of the pictures she shows and...

I ended up with this:

I'm still not sure how I feel about it.  Apparently Brooklyn isn't either.

She's been kind of a crank these days (having been sick for the past week).

I really like how the top turned out...

But the overall dress looks a lot like a night gown.

Not exactly what I was going for.

So what do I do to fix it???

Is it too long?

Should I applique daisies around the bottom?

Add a ruffle?

Add a faux petticoat ruffle?

Scrap it and count my losses?

Any suggestions would be GREAT!

Maybe next time it will be cute enough to get my model to smile for the camera...

  1. since you like the top, you could just turn it into a cute shirt.

  2. Empire waist for sure. Have it tie in the back. The bottom circumference probably needs to be a little larger to avoid the night gown look though.

  3. Andrea! Its Emily Ames (from Geneva:) ) That dress is darling and I love that you have a craft blog! I didn't know you sewed -- have you always been a seamstress, or did you pick it up after you finished teaching? I started sewing after Charlie was born and LOVE it. We are kindred spirits, apparently:)
I think the dress is super cute as is -- but here's another idea...you could chop it in half and add an elastic casing (or use elastic thread and have a shirring party) at the bottom of the shirt to make a cute little bubble-esque top! What do you think? Maybe it is cute in my head, but wouldn't work in reality? Maybe it would work and I'm a genius? ;) I'd love to know what you ended up doing with it!

  4. Ooh! I just had another idea -- what if you chopped it in half, created a casing at the bottom, and instead of using elastic, threaded the(darling)tie you already made for the dress through the casing to create a drawstring waist on the shirt. Then you could make good use out of the tie and still have a gathered waist to mimic the gathered neck and sleeves:)
Alright, I'm done now. I think I'm going to go make a shirt for Lucy though -- you've got me all excited:) Oh the possibilities!
